Big Society vs Big Kingdom

Who is going to make our communities better places to live?    How do you feel about the move to encourage local people to take responsibility for their own neighbourhoods?
The Big Society was the flagship policy idea of the 2010 UK Conservative Party general election manifesto. Its aim was "to create a climate that empowers local people and communities, building a big society that will ‘take power away from politicians and give it to people’”. Labour's Ed Miliband said that the Conservatives were "cynically attempting to dignify its cuts agenda, by dressing up the withdrawal of support with the language of reinvigorating civic society".

Thoughts from a 50 year old

Yes, I'm 50 today! And I wanted to start the day by saying thank you. Thank you to God for the life he has given me with such a great family and wonderful friends and an amazing church.

When you reach certain landmarks in life, it does cause you to reflect a bit. I am looking back at almost 24 year of being part of our church, most of that time being a leader. I've seen it grow from about 60 adults meeting in Highgrove Church, to now well over 1,000 across three congregations.  I do love our church, not because it is perfect or because it is the best church in the world, but I love it because it is the Bride of Jesus. I look around on our Sunday gatherings and I see people who are genuinely trying to follow Jesus to the best of their ability, I see people who haven't got a faith yet feeling at home and welcomed, I see people who want to serve God not just on Sundays, but through out the week in their workplaces, communities and homes, I see people finding forgiveness, freedom and healing.

Christians in the workplace

I'm not sure how many of you would have seen the documentary this week on BBC2 on Monday called "Protecting our children" This week it featured Annie Sempill who belongs to our church. She is a social worker in Bristol caring for some immensely troubled people. (If you missed the episode click here to view it on line)

As I watched the programme I was reminded once again that many people within our church are encountering situations within their workplace where they have the opportunity to bring the light, love and hope of God. We are used to hearing about being "ministers" within church, but do we perceive ourselves as being ministers in the workplace. The workplaces around Bristol need people who will be "pastors" caring for people in times of need, who will be "teachers" bringing some Godly wisdom and perspectives, "prophets" who will share what God is saying and bringers of Good News.

Compassion of God on our Streets

There are lots of people who think Christians make too much noise. All that preaching, telling everyone what to believe and how to live their lives – 'Do this! Don't do that!' And then there is all that singing on a Sunday morning. More noise! Given this bad press, it might seem strange that churches in north Bristol should get together and organise an event every May Bank Holiday and call it THE NOISE. The thing is, like many words, 'noise' has more than one meaning. While we tend to think of it as sound, often the kind that is unwanted, it can be used in another way: to make a noise is to make something known. And making something known doesn't necessarily mean making a loud announcement.

Growing Church?

On April 9th we are having a conference on ‘Growing Church' with Stuart Bell. I realise that for many people 'growing church' is not in itself a compelling vision! Growing church means overcrowding, sometimes feeling anonymous in your own church, having less access to significant people, and needing to have change strategies that can be uncomfortable.

Why would anyone want to grow church beyond a certain size?

I posed that question at our team time on Monday and these were some of the answers I received.
